Are there any side effects of tooth whitening?

Dentists have found that some people's teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the teeth whitening treatment. Using a toothpaste that contains potassium chloride such as Sensodyne Total Care F will help. We also have a product called remineralising gel which re-hydrates teeth after the bleaching process, you apply a small amount into your tooth whitening trays and wear the gel for 20 minutes after each treatment.

Some people also report discomfort or temporary pale spots on the gums. These symptoms are a result of the gel's action and are fairly common. They will disappear within a few days. Breaking a vitamin E capsule and rubbing the liquid gently into your gums will soothe them.

You can help reduce sensitivity and irritation by reducing the amount of tooth whitening gel in your tray, or the amount of time you wear the whitening trays for.

Some people also find that their mouth waters more than usual when using a tooth whitening system. This is normal and should improve as you get used to the process. Try whitening your teeth in the bath or shower, where a drain is handy.
