In a recent study into electric toothbrushes, scientists from the universities of Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester and Sheffield found that rotation oscillation electric toothbrushes removed around 7% more plaque and led to 17% less gum disease than manual brushing.
They also found that the benefits of electric toothbrushes are as much to do with how you use them. People with electric toothbrushes who do not brush as carefully as those with manual brushes or as frequently will not get any benefit.
